A few things that adults often ask us.
What is the difference between DLD and Utah Elite?
DLD is the state’s Driver License Division. It handles permits and licenses. Utah Elite teaches driving skills and recommends the right training program for you. Your road-test provider checks driving skills. These are different parts of the process.
Does a permit let me drive alone?
No. A licensed driver age 21 or older must sit beside you while you practice with an adult learner permit. Keep the permit with you.
Do I need 10 hours before a private beginner lesson?
Tell Utah Elite exactly how much driving practice you have. Our team determines whether private beginner lessons should come before regular driver education. A valid Utah learner permit is required for a driving lesson. Wait for our recommendation and scheduling instructions before paying.
How many private lessons will I need?
Utah Elite reviews your experience and may assess your skills. Your instructor determines what you should work on and when to move forward. There is no fixed lesson count that guarantees a license.
Do private lessons replace my required practice hours?
Utah Elite’s published private-lesson policy says those hours do not count toward licensing requirements. Keep a separate record of required supervised practice. If you have no practice partner or car, make a workable plan with the school and DLD before booking a road test.
Must I wait 90 days before taking lessons?
No. Get your valid permit, then learn and practice during the waiting period. Without a full approved driver education course, adults 19+ hold a permit for 90 days. Completing a full approved course removes that wait. Utah Elite recommends your training; DLD confirms the requirement that applies.
Are the permit, safety, and road tests different?
Yes. The permit test checks road-rule knowledge. Traffic Safety and Trends is a separate online safety exam. The road test checks how you drive in a car. Passing one does not complete the others.
I am 19 or 20. Why does DLD’s form say “Minor”?
DLD labels its original-license application for people 20 and under “Minor.” At age 19 or 20, use that application. At 21+, use “Adult (21 and Over).” You do not need a parent to sign at age 19+.
Can I drive alone after passing the road test?
A pass does not issue your license. Finish the DLD process and follow the valid driving privilege and restrictions the state issues to you.
Does this share my progress with the school?
Your starting information, checked steps, and message details stay in this browser. They are not sent to Utah Elite or DLD. Your text-message button opens your own texting app so you can review and send the request yourself.
