Utah Drivers License Requirements

Driver Education (15-17 years old)

*Driver education is required to apply for a Utah driver license

Requirements

  • Obtain Utah Learners Permit. Take and pass the written permit exam at your local dmv. Age requirement 15.  Schedule learners permit test at the DMV

  • Carry learners permit for 6 months prior to DMV appointment to get your drivers license after completing all of the steps outlined below 

  • Sign up and Complete drivers ed program. 

    • 9 day in person classroom course (18 hours)/30 hours online course 

    • 6 hours of behind-the- wheel instruction with a certified instructor. Driving hours cover: city driving - basic sills, highway/Freeway driving, road test prep - 6 test maneuvers on the state driving skills test 

SIGN UP

  • Complete Traffic and Safety Trends Exam on the DMV website this is a state activity

  • Pass Driving Skills Road Test. Schedule with DMV or Certified 3rd party tester

  • Schedule appointment to get your driver’s license


*The state requires each student complete 40 hours (10 hrs night driving) of behind the wheel driving practice before drivers license dmv appointment. For the list of items you will need to take with you to the drivers license appointment 

Driver Education Age 18


You are not required to carry your learner permit for 6 months before your drivers license. However, the state of Utah does require you to complete drivers ed program

Driver Education Age 19+

  • Obtain and hold a Utah learner’s permit for no less than 90 days. Schedule learners permit test at DMV 

  • Complete 40 hours of practice driving (10 of which need to be at night)

  • Complete and pass a road test at either a Utah Driver License Division office or with a private third party tester
